This is a small group tour taking place over 4 to 5 hours in the afternoon and evening. The tour will take in all the best lookouts and interesting sites and short walks on the Otago Peninsula. We take the High Road and the Low Road showcasing the picturesque harbour and the rugged ocean coastline. Enjoy touring the tidal lagoons where a variety of wading birds can be seen (binoculars provided). Visit Lovers Leap and the Pyramids, Dunedin's ancient volcanic rock formations. Then we visit Taiaroa Heads, home to NZ Furseals, nesting Cormorants, Little Blue Penguins and of course the Royal Albatross Colony. We go inside the Royal Albatross Visitor Centre for a look at the information Gallery, Giftshop and Cafe. If we are lucky we may see the majestic Royal Albatross in flight.
*note this tour is Peninsula sightseeing only and does not include any entrance fees. If you wish to include a guided tour of the Royal Albatross Nesting Area, guided tour of a Yellow Eyed Penguin Reserve or take a Wildife Cruise on this tour, be sure to select one or more of the below options and check the add-on box (or boxes) when making your booking.
The Yellow Eyed Penguin is a rare and endangered bird. This tour will visit many of the spectacular places mentioned above on the Otago Peninsula. The highlight is a tour of Penguin Place, a special conservation reserve set up to help protect these penguins from predators and to give them a better chance at survival. Your guide will take you to visit the Penguin Rehabilitation Centre and then on a guided walk through the Yellow Eyed Penguin reserve. The reserve has specially designed viewing huts and hides built to minimise our impact on the penguins and their environment. Expect to walk around 1 km over well formed walkways to view the penguins. Click "Book now" and be sure to select the Yellow Eyed Penguins check-box
The majestic Northern Royal Albatross is a major wildlife attraction on the Peninsula. These enormous birds can have a wingspan of 3 metres in length! This tour will take in all of the spectacular sights mentioned in the "Sights and Lookouts" tour above. The highlight is the guided tour of the Royal Albatross Colony.
Nesting birds and activity can be seen from close range by taking a tour of the Observatory at Taiaroa Heads. This is a truly unique opportunity to see these magnificent ocean wanderers at the only mainland breeding colony in the world. Few places on earth have such diversity and abundance of marine life as the Otago Peninsula and surrounding ocean. Perhaps the best way to get up close and personal with these marine species is to take a cruise on the harbour and out through the heads where the Albatross fly. Spot furseals on the rocks and often sea lions and penguins swimming by. We use Port to Port Wildlife Cruises for an extended (2 hour) pelagic cruise to make the most of this wonderful opportunity. *Click "Book now" and be sure to select the Wildlife Cruise check-box
*All tours include hotel pick up & drop off
*Multiple add-on tours may be selected, we will just extend the tour to make it happen
